i think a better question is what's a bad one. .22 's have become so prelavent that a junk just doesn't stay on the market for more than a few buyers with the net. i have a rem. nylon 66 MB, AB, a marlin (glenfield) mod 25, a winny lever, a mossberg .22-.410 o/u, and love them all. you'll get lots of input with this thread.

If you're looking for a plinker, I'd suggest the Ruger 10-22. It is a very reliable well built rifle, and there are a lot of optional equipment/accessories available almost anywhere.

If you can find a old Remington "speedmaster" semiauto or Remington 581 bolt action, they are excellent rifles. I wish I had never sold mine.

the marlin golden 39a is the best rifle i have shot in .22 caliber. if you prefer an autoloader then the model 99 is also a good one.

Now that was extremely predictable... I don't know why but everytime some one asks for a .22 the 10-22 is the first one thrown into the ring. Personaly I'd go with a good bolt action. There are quite a few bolt action .22s out there. Everyone and there brother makes them. The 10-22 is highly over rated. The Marlin 60 or the Savage/Stevens rifles will will serve you well if you absolutely insist on a semi auto. A 925 Marlin can be had for a fraction the cost of a 10-22 I've put 3,000 rounds through mine and it's functions like new.

I have a Ruger 10-22, and my Dads old Winchester model 72 22. Both are good rifles, but that old model 72 is the most accurate 22 I have ever shot. It has open sights and has had zillions of rounds through it as, I started shooting it when I was 8 years old, and still shoot it today at 54. I might turn it over to one of my sons in the near future.
You can't go wrong if you can find one of those old Win. model 72's. Bolt action and holds around 17 shells.

If it were me, I'd get one of these .22LR's:
Anschutz 1710D
Kimber Classic
SAKO Sporter
CZ-USA (Take your pick)

Pro's: Probably 4 of the most accurate and well made "off-the-shelf" rifles I've shot.
Con's: They can be pricey. From about $350-$1500 for their base models.

My son has a stainless Ruger 10-22 and it is a nice little rifle, but he rarely shoots it anymore since he inherited a mint 1946 Belgium made Browning. The Browning holds more , is easier to load, is accurate and feels great. I just bought my grandson (7-years old) his first rifle, a Cricketeer .22. It is a tiny little single shot that has a built-in key lock to prohibit firing. My 1st was a Marlin 81DL bolt action, but my favorite was a Winchester pump with an octagon barrel. Lots of great old, well-made rifles out there for the careful shopper.

Have you ever owned one? People like them because they're everwhere, which means that parts are cheap and readily available. They are fun to shoot, they are inexpensive, ( under $200), they are accurate, and they are reilable, ask anyone who has owned one.

There is a huge variety of choices for stocks, barrels, sights, and magazines. If the stock barrel isn't accurate enough for you, for $110 you can buy a aftermarket bull barrel. If you know what you want, you can go out and buy a reciever & bolt, a custom trigger set, a barrel, and a stock and assemble your own custom 10-22 in about 20 minutes.

When I lived on the ranch in Wyoming, my primary recreation was prarie dogs, I shot 2-3 bricks of ammo through my 10-22 each summer for 9 years. Say what you want about the 10-22, but I have no complaints at all about mine.

My favorite 22 is my Marlin 39a. It shoots as good as most bolt actions. I still have my first 22 a Remington 550 autoloader. Its real accurate too. I've had it about 45 yrs.

I have a Ruger 10-22 and personally, I don't like it. I just got a Marlin model 60 and I really like it. It's a tube fed semi-auto and it fires like a dream. I got talked into the Ruger after owning an older Marlin 60 .22 and I was a little disappointed with it. Now I just want to get rid of it.

I have a 10-22 that was not manufactured correctly. I really need to send it in. The magazine release hole was not bored properly. It is not too accurate because it shaves lead off one side of every round.
