Cold transmission "slip"

Ok...2000 Chevy Silverado, built up 5.3L, auto, no shift kit.

This may be lengthy, sorry, trying to get all the info across.

I'm very careful about letting my vehicles warm up after starting them, even if they're already at operating temp I'll let 'em sit for about 10 seconds before putting them in gear and going.

I went to leave Blockbuster a couple of weeks ago right after the temps first seriously dropped here, jumped in, started it, immediately put it in gear and drove away. Took me probably 15 seconds to get across the parking lot and pull onto the highway. First gear went normal, in second though it started to get this sort of slip thing going on, the RPM would vary up and down slightly, the power was lacking, it revved abnormally high, then slammed into third gear. And then all was normal.

Didn't do it again until last night I was leaving Walmart, got in, started it, immediately put it in gear. Went to the end of the row, turned and it did it through first gear. As soon as I felt it I put the shifter in "2" and it went smoothly into second. I put it back in "D" and it didn't act up afterwords.

I changed the fluid and haven't been able to make it do it since then. Something with old fluid and the temps dropping? Or do I need to keep a careful eye on it incase something goes wrong?

Thanks for the help.

You neglected to mention the mileage.
What did the old fluid look like? Brown with a burnt smell, or red with no noticable smell?

Sorry, it's got a tad over 144K. Fluid last changed at about 100K, fluid that came out looked red, didn't smell burnt.

Anything is possible with a GM product! What happened to "OUR" Ranger?

It's still happily running, as is the sarcasm apparently.

Probably the best thing for your mommy/daddy to do with their chebby in this case is:

1) Take it to "our" mechanic...

a) ...for an opinion
b) ...for the name of a tranny mechanic

2) Post this on a Chebby website where there's a more GM experienced, focused, and/or GM supportive crowd.

3) Before the problem with your mother and fathers pickup is overly conspicuous, suggest that they trade it in on a new Ford.

*Sounds like GM trannys are about like they were in the mid 80's in terms of reliability .

I think you may have been low of fluid and when you changed it, you got it back up to full.
