Problems starting so decided to change the plugs. Apparently they were the originals. Fairly clean, but the gap was .070+ Put in new with .040. Changed the rotor and cap. Again...original. Almost burned through.
I'm still getting a moderately bright yellow spark. Better than I had, but I'm expecting a nice hot blue one. What do I check / change next?
manual and sticker say .042. however, wouldn't opening the gap mean an even weaker spark? Battery is fine, (about 2 months old) and 1 or 2 volts wouldn't make a difference. It's checks out at 14.6 volts when running.

Not sure what manual you are looking at that says .042 but just look at the sticker under the hood not a manual.
I have a 95 302 and my sticker says .052 to .056 and a 351 is a similar engine so I would guess it would be the same.
My 88 302 does have the gap setting of .042 to .046 but that’s an 88.
The spark voltage is controlled by the spark gap, the wider the gap the higher the voltage. But too wide a gap will miss fire under hi compression.
