Just wondering..

Will my truck get better gas mileage with all of the smog equipment hooked up and working properly, or without it?

Yeah....the Big 3 and others thought the smog equipment would help better the gas mileage/ emissions of their vehicles. Instead what they got was worse gas mileage and weaker performence

All that smog crappola from the smog valve of 1961...to whatever junk is added today was/is our governments (EPA today) doing. They mandated adding all that stuff to reduce emissions. I remember seeing a Mexican '79 LTD once...no smog junk...except for a smog valve.

The big three didn't do it. The EPA made everybody do it. The PCV valve was an excellent addition to the engine. The big EPA pollution junk started in 1972. The EGR valve was/is a good device but some of the early vacuum controls to run it were horrible. The catalytic converter added in 1975 was/is a good device also but they were temperamental. The cat was a LOT better than the 1972-4 nightmare pollution control systems tho.

The distributor vacuum advance can be adjusted to remove the ping if the vacuum unit is adjustable. Otherwise the vacuum unit will need to be replaced. A replacement distributor with a custom advance curve is often required to get it right. Replacement distributors can be purchased from:

I agree with Torque1st, they are good ideas, but on our trucks they had just came out and weren't the best systems out there, and when they get old and stop functioning properly they suck.
Instead of replaceing the whole system to have a properly emissions vehical, I took everything off, and got better mileage, and alittle better performance(b/c cat was clogged and took alot out of it), instead of spending Hundreds of dollars to have a good running truck, I didn't pay anything and got rid of it all for free.

The new vehicals have a much better system that works like they are suposed to do, and I wouldn't touch any of them.
