Smile Coolant additives

Does anybody know if a coolant additive is necessary for Peak Global Gold coolant, if so please reply. Thanks Phat!

It is not a function of the coolant, but what type of diesel motor you have.

If you have the the 7.3L PSd, then yes....

If you have the 6.0L PSD then no... but you must use the correct spec'd coolant though (color alone and name is not enough)... the specs must meet what is in your manual.

Thanks for the information, I have a 2000 7.3 and have been wondering about this subject for awhile. It seems to be discussed often in these forums, but I get too many different answers. I,m wondering with all of these powerstrokes out there how many people actually check their coolant ph and nitrite levels to make sure they're within spec? Have there been many problems with cavitation? Doe's this apply to all manufactures of diesel engines? Just curious. Thanks Phat!

It is a function of motor design and coolant specs.

You need to check and add SCA's as necessary to keep withiin the specified range. Granted some people never check, but that doesn't mean that they will not have problems down the road... and if they are lucky... maybe never!!

One of the best cooling system mods to add is a coolant filter. It filters ouot sediment and other crud... and if you buy the pre-charged filters, they slowly release a steady stream of additves.

Check out dieselsite.com and click on coolant filters and look for the one for the 7.3L PSD. I bought one for my 6.0L PSD and love it.... so much so, I cut open the filter to see if it really worked (which it did). This website even used my photos after I sent them a "thank you" for such a great product letter.

My gallery shows pictures of my coolant filter installed in my '03 Excursion with a 6.0L motor... but it is essentially the same filter set-up for your 7.3L.

Like Beach said, It is important.

If you need to add to your system and are using the old coolant, drain the rad in a clean bucket put your additive in, mix it up and pour it back in. Most people and manufactures will tell you to change conventional every couple of year and the extended life after 5 years. You can get extenders that puts the good stuff back in and be able to use your coolant longer then "recommended" no matter what kind you have. A coolant filter is a pretty good thing because it is easier to put the SCA's or DCA's back in. You can get filters with different charges or no charge at all.

Also it is a good idea to put SCA's in your gas engines also because of all the aluminum components. It originally was developed to protect wet-liner diesel engines because of cavitation. They will cavitate and damage the liners because the liners are not structurally stable. They just sit in the block and flex real bad. I use Fleetguard DCA4, or 5 now, in everything I own.

I am running Prestone antifreeze 50/50 and NAPA KOOL 4056 treatment in my 93 7.3 IDI with Banks turbo. Am I ok with this if I keep an eye on the PH? I add NAPA KOOL every 6 months
