Sway Bar Link Torque Values?
Intalled two new links on the front anti-sway arm today. Does anyone have the correct torque settings ..... for the bottom bolt that attaches the link to the sway bar, and for the top bolt that attaches the link to the frame mounting bracket?
A friend told me that his Haynes manual stated 85 ft lbs for both. It sure took more muscle to break the bolts free when I removed them.
I have to break down and buy official manuals for this truck. The last time I bought the manual set for a truck was for my '84 F250HD ....... it cost $65 total for all the Ford shop manuals for the truck (engine, electrical, emissions, diagnosis, big fat main one, etc). Now how many hundreds of dollars are they? Dang.
Thanks
Jim
yes, it is a thumping noise .... on my truck it is on the right side, you can feel it a bit under the front passenger's feet, it is intermittant. I often hear it going over bumps, hard turns ..... but, sometimes not. It also seems that I don't hear it on cold mornings until I have been driving for a while.
It seems that replacing the links solved the problem for many here, but not in my case, after replacing both links with oem parts on my stock truck.
I replaced both ball joints (using the great write up on this forum) on the right side a short while ago, thinking that was the problem.
Next, I'm going to replace the bushings where the sway bar mounts to the axle.
The lower ball joint was loose before I replaced it .... other than that, I can not find and looseness in my front suspension when i crawl under there.
Any ideas?
Jim

spring pads on these trucks break also causing a clunking noise on rebound.
another area often overlooked is shock absorbers. if they are over-extended the internal stops can be damaged causing the same type noise. (often imitates a broken sway bar link)
