tranny cooling

do the 5.4 or 6.8 superduties have any form of transmission cooling from the factory?

i was looking at mine and i see the radiator, with another large cooler in front of that..presumably for the air conditioning?

but theres also a third cooler, a rather small one, mounted at an angle underneath the second large cooler infront of the radiator.

is this maybe a tranny cooler? if not, does anyone know what it is?

i want to put a transmission cooler on the truck if it doesnt already have one, but i dont want to have 5+ coolers hanging around if i dont need them there.

I would assume they do just like my diesel. It's actually in the radiator on mine.

Yes, A/C condenser.

If you want to run cooler tranny fluid, you could also install a Mag-Hytec or other aftermarket tranny pan. I have the M-H pan here but have not installed it yet. When I do the install I will be changing the internal and in-line filters along with doing a flush.

Refer to this post by FTE member Bear Hunter on the Truck Blog site for the "How To" on flushing the 5R110 Torqueshift tranny.

http://www.truckblog.com/story-582-h...t_transmission

Some things about the M-H pan is that I liked and why I went with them instead of another maker:

Largest extra capacity that I saw listed in the specs at 8.3 pints of extra fluid.
Port for a tranny temp sensor.
Cooling fins cast into the pan, both internal and external fins means better cooling.
O-ring seal.
Magnetic drain plug.
Serialized part. Mine is #974 for the 5R110 tranny and I've registered it with them.

According to the literature that came with the pan, lowering fluid temp from 195F to 175F doubles fluid life from 50K to 100K miles. Cooler fluid temps is something that both the fins and the extra capacity will help achieve.

From other threads I've read on here, there's no need to add an aftermarket tranny cooler. The 2003 and up have a very good one as is. If you really think you need it cooler, try changing to a Mag tranny pan as thedaddycat suggested. With an aftermarket cooler you have more of a chance of fluid leaks. I'll try to find some of the other threads that discuss this since you're not able to search it.

EDIT: I just saw in your profile that you're in a 7.3L. Not the same cooler I have. I'm searching for past posts that might help you out.

There's one for some good reading.

Redo-EDIT: I just saw in your profile that you're in a (DOH) yeah, 5.4L. Brain Fart. Can't search, think and type at the same time! Not the same cooler I have. I'm searching for past posts that might help you out.

The above post will still apply for yours.

thanks a million man, i really appreciate it.

the extra tranny cooling has always looked like a good idea to me, and i figured id give myself a little insurance with a cooler now that i have the cash for it, but not if its going to be redundant in teh future

The small cooler on the bottom's not a transmission cooler. Why would you need a power steering cooler? It never hurts to know too much.

I don't know. I only know that's what it is because I traced the lines to the power steering pump. I never make too many turns on the drag strip anyway. ROFLMAO

My buddy pointed out to me today that the power steering pump powers the Hydrobooster on the brakes. That's why it has the cooler. Hard to stop this beast without the Hydroboost.

The power steering system can make a lot of heat even if you are not turning. The pump is making pressure all the time, and that shears the fluid. Shearing fluid makes a lot of heat, so it needs a cooler. Even trucks that don't have hydraboost have power steering coolers.
