I'm new to truck swaps. I have restored many Buick GranSports over the past 35 years but this is my first truck restoration. I chose a 1983 F 250 because I like the style of the body and it is a non-emmissions truck...don't have to worry about cats and stuff.
I'd like to dump the three speed C6 tranny and install a later unit if possible? Is there a tranny swap that will work and if so the pro's and con's?
Appreciate any help and everyone have a Merry Christmas.
I am assuming that you want a 4spd overdrive automatic? The two main transmissions I can think of at the moment are the AOD and the E4OD. The E4OD requires a computer to run, which some companies make stand a lone units for this. The AOD is only available for small block motors. What type of motor is currently in the truck will make the biggest decision in what type of tranny you can run.

351M, 400, 429, 460 -share the same bellhousing ( C-6, E4OD)
6.9, 7.3 deisels -share the same bellhousing ( C-6, E4OD)
The transmission forum can also provide some more information
The truck has a 351W so it looks like the AOD is the answer. Really do not want to get tied up with computers to accomodate a tranny.
I'm assuming I will have to go with a floor shift or a steering column change using the AOD tranny? Would also assume a steering column from a later model pickup will swap fairly easily to accomodate the new shift pattern? Will a dash pod from post 86 truck fit the 83 setup or are they different? Also, and I promise this will be the last question, will I have to change the driveshaft yoke or are the splines the same on the C6 and AOD?
I have not had a AOD in any of the trucks I have owned, but I believe the same column should work. I think the AOD has the following pattern P-R-N-OD-D-1, but I am not positive. I think the AOD was available from 83 or 84 and on. The dashes in these trucks are all the same from 80-86, but the wiring had a couple of changes. If no one else chimes in, members in the Transmission Forum should be able to help you out with the details.
