My understanding is it is similiar to what is on the SUV's. When wheel slipage is detected it a)backs the throttle off and b)applies the brakes to the spinning wheel. This stops the wheel from spinning and allows the other wheel of the same axle to get power. Mercedes started this trend with their M-class SUV's about 5 years ago and everyone else has jumped on the band wagon. With throttle by wire systems this is most likely the easists way to deal with wheel spin. All the sensors and equipment is there for the ABS system already so it is a matter of programming.
