I've got a 77 F-350 with a 460,C6 and 4.10 rearend. I have a shifting issue with the C6. To me it feels like it is'nt shifting to 3rd gear. A transmission shop looked at it today and they say it is shifting from 1st to 3rd and skipping 2nd. I think it's not going into 3rd because at 55 mph the engine is turning some high rpm's. I can manually shift from 1 to 2 but from 2 to D there is no shift. Also, all other functions seem fine. The tranny shop says it probably has a bad band.
I have no experience with automatics and could use some opinions on this.
Check the vac. modulator hose at the transmission, you should have manifold vacumm there. Also when you pull the hose off the port, if you have fluid present, the modulator is no good. You probably have a control issue rather than a clutch/band problem. Don
also how well does reverse work, because the high range/ reverse clutch's always go out because there's normally only 3 clutch plates instead of 4 or 5, I cant remember if the band plays a role in 3 gear or not, but as Don said it most likely a control issue, check the simple things first
The band for second gear needs an occasional adjustment for it work properly. Most of the repair manuals give you the correct process in adjusting the band for the C-6.
Thank you all for the replies. I have the truck back home so here is the real deal. The tranny shop is correct on this. The truck does skip over 2nd gear. It just shifts smoothly from 1st to 3rd. It will not downshift from 3rd to 2nd either. If going slow enough, then accelerate, it will downshift from 3rd to 1st otherwise it just lugs along in 3rd. The tranny does'nt make any strange noises or slip. All other functions are normal.
to adjust the band tighten the stud to 10ft/lbs then back it off 1 1/2 turns and tighten the locking nut to 40 ft/lbs while holding the stud from moving, they say to replace the nut with a new one when doing this, but its up to you

Drop the pan and have a look.
If there is a bunch of junk in the pan the lining has come off the band.
There are bands available that can be installed without removing the transmission.
It will depend on the band surface of the drum though.
