Re-engineering Wheel Wells

I was wondering if anyone has ever just cut out that part of the inner wheel well that causes so many trucks to rust?
If It is there for a support brace, couldn't a different brace be formed and Bonded (Fusor) and or welded to the inside of the wheel well, then a plastic peice from something like a front inner fender be attached to the brace?
That way the inner fender could be washed at a carwash.
Ideas? anyone. Pro's Con's..
I'm just needing help brainstorming for this project in the Springtime.

I would try it, If there is something that won't stay up just Fabricate another bracket branching off of someting like the frame or firewall or fender and radiator core support.

You mean like this?

I left a 1" x 8" or so opening on the inside on the lip as an experiment. Pic is before spraying with ospho then saturating with spray on bed liner.

Time will tell.
