I have a 2002 f250 4x4 7.3 and am looking into getting a remote start for it, I was thinking that the ford units would work the best as they were designed to work with the keyless entry, etc. Does anyone have any experience with this and if so what are the part numbers as I have noticed a few on ebay and was wondering what would might work the best and the least amount of hassle to install as I hope to do this myself. Thanks.

I got a crimestopper keyless entry remote start for $45 and love it. If I were to do it again, I would get the code alarm (audiovox bought them) because the remotes are smaller. This is also the unit that ford would use if you had them do it.
If you want an alarm too, go with two way remotes.
I installed the CrimeStopper too. I didn't really get it for the remote start, but for the programmable 1-5 minute turbo cooldown.
I don't think it's an install job for the faint-hearted tho.... It took me two weeks of studying the wiring diagrams for the 350 and two days to install.......
I will agree that the remotes are pretty large but can't beat the price on eBay and it does work well.

I forgot to mention about the timer. That is a big part of why I got it too.
There are others on this site with that system who are satisfied too.
Install is not too bad if you get the color coding from crimestopper, any unknowns - we can help you with. It took me about 6 hours.
Make sure that you hook it up right the first time. Strip wires, braid, solder, then cover. I didn't and had to go back.
I installed the Crimestoppers also. It did take a couple of days for the install, but I'm no electrical wizard and I did it. This means you could probably do it too.

I had a VIPER remote starter in my 2002 F-250 (gas) and I loved it. I believe it cost about $200 installed. Although the unit could have been removed and placed in my current truck, 2000 F-250 7.3 diesel, I did not have time to take it out prior to the trade-in/purchase of my current diesel. The unit worked really well and offered a cool down option for 3 or 5 minutes. I am wanting to get one for my current 2000 F-250 but have some concerns with the severe cold weather. Couple weeks ago I did not have the truck plugged in and it sat for 2 days in 7 degree (F) weather. When I finally started it, it took several attempts to finally get it to start. Not sure if it would have started if I had tried to start it with a remote. I am sure it would not have a problem when usually plugged in. Anyone have any input regarding the cold weather and remote starts for diesels?
Thanks.
Mine will try to start 3 times before it shuts off. That equals 3 cycles of the glow plugs. It has never failed to crank up the truck. Now keep in mind I live in Georgia not Canada.

It was -8 last Saturday when I left a job I was doing up in the mountains.
I wasn't plugged in for 9-10 hours. I have a Crimestopper and in the winter I change the program options over to a 30 second wait to start delay. The crimestopper will make 3 attempts to start, then it shuts down. That gives the glowplugs 1:30 to warm up which has always been more than enough in the 5yrs I've had it. I can program it to start every 4 hrs if I want, but never have needed to. I know most of the 2 ways you program a temperature you want it to start at. I installed a Prestige APS 996A in the wifes car. Its a quality unit too, and she likes the two way so she knows when her car is running. I can hear if mine starts. Especially in the summer, when I switch over to a straight pipe. It's just too loud in the winter when the EBPV kicks in. Sounds like a 747 from the back. My tip angles out the back and aims right at the neighbor across the street. He "casually" mentioned something about it so I took the hint.
Sorry for the long post. Bottom line is the remote start works great for me, even in the cold weather months. The power window roll up module is a worthwhile add on too (the wife's higher end one came with it built in). It's nice to just hit a button when I leave it outside at night or when its raining.
I have a ungo alarm/starter, made by alpine. It will try to start up to three times. I can set how long it will crank each time. And i have a delay relay timer on it that allows me to set the wait to start time for the starter from 0-60 seconds. Most people just hook up to the wait to start wire which goes off in about ten seconds, with the delay relay i can set it to wait up to a minute for the glow plugs to heat up. I have it set for about 30 seconds right now since it's pretty cold right now in wi. The relay was seperate from the starter and i believe(not sure) it would be able to work with any starter.
with the crimestopper unit I have the delay setup for 15 seconds and it has started on the first try every time. Coldest it's been here so far is 5 with windchill.
I have a "Cool Start" unit, kinda a plain jane...tries 3 times to start, 30 sec glow plug warm-up and locks the doors....$250 installed. Have had alot of "fun" with it. I tell the cute gals, look, my truck will "wink" at you....when the doors lock, park lights flash 1 time, when you unlock, they flash 2 times.
PONCH37300, (and everyone else) thanks for all the info. Being relatively new to diesels, do the glow plug's continue to work even after the WAIT TO START light goes off? I believe the owner's manual says to cycle the key a couple times when the weather is severely cold. Also my 2002 LARIAT had heated leather seats but my current 2000 LARIAT does not. Boy, those heated seats sure were nice. Finally, just noticed this morning that the rear differential was leaking oil. I believe the seal is called a pinion seal. Although the truck is 7 years old it only has 53,000 miles on it. Has anyone else heard of similiar problems with the rear differential? I may post this in a different category if I don't get much feedback.
Thanks for all the great info.
yes the glow plugs can last up to 120 seconds even the wait to start light goes off before that. My lariat doesn't have the heated seats but this tuesday they will be getting the heaters put in them and they will come on with my remote start so when i get in their in the cold mornings they will already be toasty. I'm not sure about your diff leak but you would get more responses if you started a new thread with that as the title and maybe put it in the superduty forum instead of the 7.3. Goodluck
