Gauge Cluster Question

Hi Everyone.

When I bought my truck it did not have a gauge cluster so I won one off eBay only to find that it was not right for my truck. So I won another one that I thought was right, but I guess I am not a quick learner and it also was not right. I have a 1970 and from what I have read on the forums they have a special kind w/ a printer circuit board that differs from 1971-1972. One of the clusters I bought is what I believe is referred to as a mechanical cluster as it has a whole bunch of wires going out the back. My question is whether or not it is possible just to hard wire this cluster in by cutting off the connector that should go to the back of the proper cluster for my truck. If anyone has a clue if this is possible please let me know. Thanks a bunch and if some pictures or better descriptions would help please tell me.

Thanks in advance,

Jake

Sorry, can't help. I'd suggest the Haynes manual for the truck. Mine has a very detailed schematic in the back of the book that covers ALL the options of the years.

If you have a wire schematic (spell that right?) you can. I just put a 69 cluster into my 72 sclb. I have several clusters for 69, 70 and 72 if you want one we can work something out.

So it can safely be said that by hooking up the harness wires from the car with wires of the same color from the cluster would not do the trick? Thanks.

I have a '70 cluster somewhere in the garage, I have a '69 so it won't work for me. I got it for the plastic and the gauges. I would be willing to part with it.

Re-wiring it could probably work, but be time consuming and maybe a head-ache. But I myself have been known to do things the hard/slow way.

It could be an issue of ammeter versus ALT light. I know that's not a direct swap; I've tried it.

I'll have to check for these earlier trucks but,
Considering the 70's trucks requires a 14 pin connector and the other an 18 pin connector, you have swap in the complete harness.
