Cold Weather Starts

Is it recommended or necessary to allow the engine to idle and warm up before driving during cold weather starts? I have a 1999 Explorer XLT 4.0L SOHC. I usually start the engine, allow the temp gauge to register and then start driving. Is this a waste of time?

Not necessary anymore on newed vehicles. While it is a good "conservative" practice, just think of the gasoline (and time) you're wasting. You won't hurt it any driving it right off the bat, but to be safe I would avoid hard accelerations until it reaches normal operating temperature.

I'd be more concerned about your check engine light.

I allways let my vehicles warm up a bit. I know I don't want to get moving to quick when it's cold out so why not let you car warm up a little.
