Is this normal?

I have a 1996 f250 diesel (rebuilt from a rollover). It runs fine but when I first start it, the charging system doesn't kick in for several minutes - has nothing to do with engine speed either. After 2 or 3 minutes (I'm estimating here), the voltage goes up to where it belongs. Is this normal? If not, any ideas?

What you are seeing is normal glow plug operation on the charging system. It takes a couple minutes for the glow plugs to cycle each startup.

The owners manual suggest you not load up the electrical system with headlights and heater fan, etc. while the glowplugs are energized.
But that doesn't make a lot of sense to me since you have probably over 800 CCA from 2 batteries in parallel circuit and the plugs are only on a couple of minutes.
I start up and turn my lights and heater on and drive away. I figure a little extra load on the alternator puts a little (yes, very little, I know) extra load on the engine and the engine doesn't really start warming up unless it is under some load anyway.

Thanks for the responses. I thought once the thing started plugs weren't on anymore - seems like it'd only help if the alternator helped out - but wadda I know. Thanks again.
