Ok I have a question about these auto hubs. I had a few inches of snow and went out to plow some driveways, well switched to 4 high and no traction. Plowed a few spinning and got pissed, jumped out of truck and switched hubs from auto to lock and presto no more spin. What gives..??? Are these things like my 99 SD manual hubs? Is auto really free?? I just dont get why a truck thats 5 years newer seems so should I say.....not as tough as the old one?? Please advise as what is going on. I checked the manual for the heck of it and it says I should have 4 wheel drive with the hubs in the auto selection. Any insight will be greatly apreciated.
Auto should engage automatically when you put it in 4 wheel drive. The problem that a lot of people have is that they are vaccume activated, and can fail for many reasons. What getting out and manualy turning them does is just over rides the auto feature. My hubs are manual, so I can't really help you figure out what exactly is wrong with yours, but I'm sure someone will be along shortly that can.
OK, Check the vacuum lines and wiring connections going to the Pulse Vacuum Hublock (PVH) solenoid. You should find a line off the vacuum reservoir can going to this solenoid. Are you moving truck when selecting 4x4 high or just doing it at standstill? If shifiting into 4x4 high tooth blockage may occur and not let hubs lock in. Also, it can take awhile for hubs to shift (51 sec) according to Ford. A high vacuum signal is sent to engage hubs and a low vacuum signal is sent to disengage hubs. Get the truck moving, shift to 4x4 high and drive it at least a minute then check hubs. If this doesn't work manually engage then disengage hubs at least twice observing the above time and drive it again. If this doesn't work hubs my need serviced or repaired.
Thanks guys........................
I'll try the waiting and moving thing in the morning. I just dont want to have problems with this thing everytime I need 4 wheel drive. I love my Powerstroke, It has more power and being a Lariat its way nicer than my old truck. I just dont like the whole hub trouble thing. My 99 V-10 was a beast but 6 mpg and gas at 3 bucks she had to go. Thanks again for the help.....
I have 2000 F250, crew cab, 113,000 miles. I recently took the auto hubs apart, cleaned them with WD40, and added a light coating of white grease. They work like brand new now.
It's time to change the vacumm lines leading to the axels. They'll get soft and brittle over time and clog up. If you grab one and get that black hard to wash off gunk on your hands, they're shot. It'll only cost you a couple off dollars.
