hi all..im currently looking to add some sound to my 86 150 w/ 5.0 EFI...i put a glasspack on it earlier this year...and its ok...but nothing at high RPM's..im looking for suggestions as far as headers/exhaust systems to make her sound pretty deep..not so high-pitched and whiny...any and all help is appreciated...oh by the way..this is my work truck, so im not looking to break the bank..just to make it not sound soo wimpy...thanks in advance
About 8 years ago, I bought some used Mustang 5.0 factory shorty headers, and had a dual exhaust installed, as well as a crossover pipe. I used bottle mufflers that I could see right through, and it sounds awesome. Its not too loud, it has a nice quiet idle, yet has a slight rumble at idle. When cruising normally, it has a nice light rap to it, hardly noticeable in the truck. I like to drive with the window open. ;-)
Under heavy accelleration, it is loud, but a very impressive sound. Have the local Chevy guys jealous. Added a considerable amount of power too, on the top end.
Not sure if you want to go to the extent I did, but it was worth it. After eight years only had one of the welds fail, but I fixed it myself.
I paid 50 bucks for the headers, and paid around 600 to have them installed, including the dual exhaust. I probably would have saved quite a bit of money if I installed the headers myself, but then the drive to the exhaust shop with open headers would have been over 10 miles and a couple of noise tickets too.
One other detail I left out, I had them install the bottle mufflers backwards so the louvers inside the glasspacks didn't obstruct the airflow as much. Oh yeah, and NO catalytic converters. (not sure if you can do that where you are from, but its no problem in Alberta)
i have the same truck with flowmaster 40's, not to impressed on the loudness of the truck. the sound on the other hand if very good. that deep powerful sound. if i had to do it over again i would have put imco mufflers. they have the same tone but way louder. and by the way i'm pretty sure its illegel to run true duals on the 1986 fords.
