I have been told that you could jump start a 6 volt system with a 12 volt battery - the subject truck ihas a positive ground 6 volt system - even with a brand new with a fresh charge didn't have enough nut to start the motor - I was wondering could I take a loose 12 volt battery to jump it without any problems - or could I run a series of 6 volt batteries to add jumping power?
You can jump a six volt with a 12 volt so long as you get on with it and don't leave it on there for a long time. If you trying to get a six volt vehicle to turn over on six volts, you need everything in tip top shape. You need the correct solenoid and extra large, correct battery cables with good clean connections. 6v takes twice the current compared to 12v to turn the motor over and run the truck. All the wiring on a six volt system is larger.
If your battery is fully charged and it still won't turn it over , I'd check all your connections on your battery cables, all your ground surfaces, etc... 6V is very fussy about good grounds. Also put a ground cable from the frame to the block. Make sure the starter surfaces are clean, the mounting plate on the block where the starter mounts is not painted, and the end plates on the starter itself are clean. Most people paint them all nice and pretty and forget you need the unpainted surfaces for the ground circuit to work.
I've had a six volt pos ground for 17 years and have a great results with 12 volt jumps,Just make sure every thing else is shut off(headlights, blowers, etc)and dont leave it conected longer than you have to to get it started.Good luck
An old mechanic once told me that the 6 volt battery cables get corroded inside the cable. You know the corrosion that forms on the outside of the cable...well think of that inside your positive cable. If you twist it enough, it sometimes will break the corrosion up enough to start, but chances are it will eventually be re-corroded. Cheap cables as he put it...buy the best there is. I couldnt figure out why mine was not starting until I replaced the fairly new cables (no more then a couple of years).... I have a 48.
