98 e-350/ v-10 is stuttering under acceleration. 110000 miles and as far as I know, no plug work has been done. Do I use a code reader to determine which cylinder is mis-firing? What is the lay out of the cylinders 1 thru 10? Is there a test for a good/defective COP? Other concern is working space for this job, what has to be removed for access to plugs? ( besides doghouse/air intake?) Thanks, John
If it were my truck, I would just pony up with 10 new plugs and COPs. Figure the ones you have made it 110K, new ones should make it as far. Just my $.02
OK, plugs arent a problem but 60-72 bucks a pop (local quotes) times ten for cop's makes it quite an expense. Granted I don't want to be doing this again in a couple of months. What about the eBay cop's? I've seen some sets (8) available and probably will come across some sets of 10......John
IMHO...I would do a complete plug change with boots. Only replace the COP that needs it.
V10 2v Cylinder Order:
Passenger side (front to back) 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
Driver Side (front to back) 6, 7, 8, 9, 10
Do a search...and you will find the "Instructions" for the plug change. OBTW: Use an inch torque wrench because they are more accurate than a ft/lb wrench at such low torque needs. 168 in/lbs or 14 ft/lbs.
Buy ONE COP! If you don't have a reader that can read the misfire counters (or don't want to pay for someone else to do it), put the new COP on cylinder 1, and test. If that doesn't fix it, swap the new one onto cylinder #2, and re-test, and keep going until you get to #10.
As you remove the COPs, either replace the boots, or just clean them up good, and use dialectric grease on them.
Click on this link to search for V10 plug change using Google, if search doesn't work for you:
After figuring out which COP is bad (or what boot was dirty enough to cause it), then decide if you want to change the plugs - which you SHOULD after that much mileage.
It'll make a world of difference in how it runs and starts when hot.
Thanks for the help. The tester looks good, I doubt I'll buy one until I am pulling my hair out after doing the plugs and ONE cop ritual (and still stuttering). The google search article(s) were a great help. Now I just need to motivate myself with the 15 degree temps this morning........ I know, Monsta I'll just drive over to your place and bring my parts and tools!
