brake trouble

i have a major probblem with my back brakes. seems like the previous owner didnt install the brakes like they were supposed to. a spring came off and wrapped up in the brakes and basicly ate up every thing. i bought every thing i need to put it back together , but am looking for a parts break down on how to put it back together. im not to familiar with this kind of brake set up with the little cable. so if anybody would have a breakdown on this it would be realy appreciated to make sure everthing goes back to specs and i dont end up with the same probblem again. thanks for any help

brake trouble

If the other side is messed up as well, it won't be a good reference...

You could try pointing your browser to www.autozone.com. They have free
online maintenance info, including some diagrams for older F250/350 rear brakes.

I've found their web-site to be useful. However, I've noticed that sometimes the given
procedures aren't always perfect and/or tell you to do too much, so use your own
judgement.

Hope this helps, Tony

thanks crazymike and tbone for the responce. im not to sure what the other side looks like, but im pretty sure it wont be of any help because the back brakes on the truck never worked since i bought it. my only delima is some of the parts are missing and i bought a kit to do the brakes but im not sure if there is any thing else missing that isnt in the kit.

Just keep in mind that you need to be VERY careful doing a conversion like this. You will probably need to get an adjustable proportioning valve. Disk brakes take more fluid to work (hence the need to adjust the flow with the proportioning valve) but once they start to work they brake way, WAY, WAY, more effectively than drums. Because of this fact, disks on the rear of an unloaded pickup will lock up even easier and faster than drums will. Since the rears already have a tendancy to lock up too easily on a pickup, putting disks on the rear is going to exaggerate this problem even more.

Be very careful and take your time to get it dialed in correctly....

Very good. Then you know about the potential pitfalls. Just wanted to be sure. Swapping ends at 65 because you applied the brakes is no fun......

j tate, maybe you could give us a little more back ground on your rear brakes...
-the ebrake spring
-or one of the retaining springs for the brake

I have never heard of this before....the one good thing is these are easy brakes to work on, as tbone suggested, if you could some sort of reference, your away to the races.

thanks bc6.9 for the responce. today i went to a repair shop that had a exploded view of the back brakes and its parts, the kit that i bought had everything i needed in it. the only thing that i need now is to know if my truck came with proportioning valve or rabs system, i think it is proportioning valve but not to sure. the other thing i need to know is i heard of several people talking about the valve on theback axle, what is this and is my truck supposed to have one. 1985 f350 6.9.

I don't think Rear ABS had even been invented yet in 1985 when your truck was built, j tate. So I don't think you have RABS.

As for the load sensing valve, I'm not sure whether those were put on the F350 or not - though I'd think so since I'm pretty sure they were on the 85 F250.

If yours has one like mine there will be a lever mounted on the passenger side of the rear differential with a linkage that goes to the valve mounted above it underneath the bed.

Mine was on the drivers side on my 86.
That valve is also residing in the salvage bin in the garage.

The rear disk brake master cylinder has a larger front reservoir than the drum brake master cylinders do.
