Speedo problem

I have a 98 B3000 that i just perchased recently. In the past couple days the speedo has been bouncing around or at times not working at all. But then at times it works perfectly. My father has a 95 E350 cube van with the same exact problem and his mechanic couldnt figure the problem out. Can anyone help me figure this problem out. I would assume its the cluster. Beyond that i dunno. And at the same time in my B i get the abs light once in a while but i shut it down and start it back up and its off, again very random. Help would be great.

iirc, the speedo on the 98+ run off the sensor on the differential. If that sensor goes bad, the symptoms are exactly as you described.

that was kind of a dumb question. i guess the better question to ask is, is it easy to replace and is the part called a speed sensor or what should i ask for when i look for a new one? is it a napa part or factory part?

I have a 97 Ranger XLT 2.3 2x4. I had/have the same problem. The sensor in the diff is called the abs speed sensor, the sensor in the trans is the vss (vehicale speed sensor). I changed both sensors, and the cluster and still have the same trouble. I have to say its not as bad as before but it still sucks. The sensors are relitively cheap ($25.00 & $9.00) and pretty easy to change. The cluster on the other hand cost about $180.00 and is not to hard to swap out. Good luck, Joe

But in 98 they changed it so the sensor on the diff does both abs and vehicle speed.

Its not difficult to change.
