This is my first post and hope someone out there can help. If I see any posts that I can help with, I will be happy to jump in.
This is a 2WD 2001 F150 SuperCrew, 5.4 with a 9.75 limited slip differential with 122,000 miles.
Some History.
It made terrible howling noises at all speeds during acceleration and at load, but not when coasting. I have now replaced ring and pinion, all bearings including axles, all seals, clutch pack and proper fluids including the additive. The only old parts are the axles and spider gears, which were said to be in great condition, and the housing. Mechanic said the gear contact pattern was perfect and the backlash was 6 thousands.
New problem:
Now it howls between 45 and 60 MPH under acceleration only. Not as loud as before, but still very noticable. Is there some more, finer adjusting needed? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Ken
Have you tried to increase the air pressure in the rear tires to max. for the tire? Does the howling change ? Are these highway or off-road treads ? Put the rear of the truck on jack stands, start the engine and run it up to about 30-35 mph. (Slowly accelerate and slowly decelerate.) Any howling? Front wheel bearings can make this kind of sound as well. When is the last time that you greased them? (and checked them for wear?) Just my two cents. Good Luck to you.
