Electronic Ignition

Hi Again,

I have a 1986 FI 302 with electronic ignition which I purchased new in 1986. I never had any ignition problems until about 5 years ago when it cut off on a wet foggy morning. Would not restart but did start about 20 minutes later. Took to shop and they replaced the outside distributor module. I have the ECCI-4 system. Ran fine for about 6 months and then starting having irratic problems with starting and cutting off. Replaced the internal distributor pickup device and all was good. About 6 months later starting cutting off erratically and seemed to do better when I sprayed wd-40 inside the distributor. Cutoff one day in town and had towed because it would not start and replaced outside distributor module again and all was okay. 6 months later it started the irratic cutting off and not starting problem and the wd-40 seemed to resolve each time. Last weekend it started missing bad whenever I gave it gas but idled fine. It did something similar when the internal pickup device failed previously. I have new plugs and wires within last 12 months and truck sets most of the time. I am not sure but believe I have a moisture problem which is causing premature module both internal and external failures. Anybody had a similar problem and or got any advice. I'm tired of this situation and somehow believe that evidently when the first module failed that a moisture barrier was broken and hasn't been stopped since. Thanks.

The only thing that I can suggest is to replace both parts at the same time. Also make sure everything is clean and dry when you put the distributor back together. I have limited experience with this but it sounds to me like you have a corrsive material built up in the distributor and by only changing one part at a time, you are transferring the corrosion back and forth.

Thanks for your reply. I inspected the inside of distributor and found cap posts severely corroded and a lot of oil residue(probably from wd-40 spray for last few months) in bottom of distributor. Cleaned everything up and put some electric grease on the adapter joint, the module connections, cap posts and cap top seal and it now runs like a skeered rabbit. Hopefully it will continue to do so.
