Pending first purchase adventure
Thought I'd post an update now that my new 65 is home safe in the garage. The bus ride from Michigan to Alabama was a real trip with many interesting chararcters. After what seemed like forever, I arrived in Athens Alabama Tues morning 8am and was met by "Ronnie" who was leaning on my new truck. I could tell at 25 yards it was what I'd hoped for in terms of body and exterior condition (really nice). We took it for a good drive and then went over to his house, met his family, had coffee, etc. for almost two hours. They were really great people.
I then punched "home" into the GPS and set off. It was sunny and a nice view the entire way. Only had a few problems en-route. About 20 minutes into the trip, I stopped for a burger. I popped the hood to see how things were holding together and noticed a nice stream of gas squirting on the exhaust manifold from the fuel pump vent hole. As luck would have it, there was a auto parts store directly accross the street and they had the parts I needed. I had tools with me and the change-out went smoothly. It was running rough in the hills of Kentucky and running really rich. I ended up having to change out the points and regap by eye - got it close enough to make it home.
Half hour after I pulled into the garage, the freezing rain started. I guess all the prayers really helped.
Now, I need to figure out why there's an oil leak from the back of the intake manifold. At least I don't have to do that on the side of the road.
Thanks for all the support and once I can post, I'll put a picture in my gallery.
Have a great holiday.
John.
Oil leak at the back of the intake...pretty much a 'right of passage' to owning an FE.
The end gaskets shrink...I'm guessing not having the distributor to help hold it down at the back is the reason the back ends leak more frequently. Lots of guys mistake this for a rear main seal leak because it all collects and drips off the bellhousing. The intake weighs nearly as much as the whole truck, so you'll want an engine hoist to pull it off. Yes, really. Fresh set of gaskets should fix you up. I'd also check the timing chain for slack and replace that if it's loose, since you'll have the coolant drained and so on. Glad your trip went well. There's your first memory already made with your new truck.
You MUST change the oil. You probably have diluted your oil with gas, which thins it etc etc. When fuel pumps leak they usually leak down into the crank case as well.
Of course, congrats on the new slick as well.....
I hadn't thought about gas getting into the oil - I'll change it out right away.
Have a nice holiday season.
John.
