I am almost ready to put the engine & trans in my 56 for the last time. Mounts are made & plumbing is ready . I will need to adjust the torsion bars , if not to lower the front a little , at least to equalize side to side. I got anxious when I set the engine in for the first time a turned the adjuster on the drivers side . I lost count of the number of turns .Now I'm wondering how to get both sides adjusted the same , more or less. I realize that one side might end up being turned up or down more than the other to level the truck side to side.Should I start with a common point & try getting the adjustments close to the same ? If so , where do I start ? Back both off completely & count turns as go back in/up ? I think I backed the drivers side off completely when I screwed with it before . What to do ? Thanks.
I wouldn't fret about it too much. I just measured the distance from the floor to the frame on each side to get mine equalized. Regardless of where you put it, it will have to be changed when the final alignment is done anyway. I'm sure mine is too low right now so I suspect it will be jacked up some when I have the alignment done. I completely removed my torsion bars to get all the rust off and paint them.
As Vern said, I wouldn't worry about the number of turns or stuff like that. With the truck settng on a nice level surface I'd make some measurements from the floor to the frame, set the ride height where you want it and then even it up side to side.
And don't forget that when tightening or loosening the nuts on the adjusters, that tightening or loosening the left nut, raises or lowers the RIGHT side, and vice versa. Don't ask how I know that...
