The Project Continues - Exhausting!

Fleet Filter 46637 installed - Wow! What a difference!

5" MKO Performance Diesel exhaust system ordered, received but before I tried this myself, I check on this board for some thoughts and, after "seeing" all the comments about troubles with the downpipe I elected to take the truck and pipes to a custom muffler shop near here. I'm glad I did!

What should have taken 2-3 hours ended up at 6 hours with 2 techs working on it. The mainproblem was that the shoulder of the 4" downpipe-to-turbo flange adapter was too small necessitating some ingenuity and a grinder. The flange clamp just wouldn't fit unless some trimming was done. Also, several areas near the adapter had to be flattened a little to clear the engine. There's NO WAY I could have done this in my shop!

All in all and at the end, the 5" is in and sounds great! Probably my imagination but seems a little more responsive to the throttle. A little louder with a noticeable low drone throughout the power range. No increase in whistle volume (that's okay). Fuel mileage?...too soon to tell as my footprint's still in the firewall. With valium and counseling I should have a grasp on realistic mileages soon.

On a side note: 28 deg here this morning in Central TX. Started up normally and within 5 minutes of warmup noticed a dripping of coolant about 1 drop/second. The dripping went away as soon as the thermostat opened up - seems I need some new clamps on the upper (return) hose.

Many thanks to all who gave me their sage advice about what I could do to the beast to "wake it up". Special thanks to Kris (StrokinIt) who actually gave me a shopping list of things I could/should do with $2000 and one year to do it in.

Current status of planned upgrades:

Fleet Filter No. 46637 (Kwik Filter mod)..............done
5" MKO Diesel Performance Mod..........................done
Autometer "A" pillar gauges from Purediesel........ordered
DP Tuner (stock, 80 econ, 120 race, 80 tow)........ordered
Overboost Regulator (ITP Diesel)........................ordered
BTS Valve Body.............................................. ...inquery made, order to follow
SS High Pressure Oil Rail Crossover (ITP Diesel)...ordered
Eliminate Quick-disconnect fuel fittings...............planned
New compressor wheel (Xtreme Diesel)...............planned
CCV re-route............................................. ........planned
Transmission cooler...........................................p lanned
Intercooler upgrade........................................... planned

Again, thanks to everyone who helped me determine a path of upgrades - much more to do but all in time!

I've learned much from you! I was once a better-than-average gas mechanic but have grown rusty with time. Thanks for re-kindling some old memories and skills!

Glad to hear a good post. Most are just problems and you never hear how they turn out. Yes, she will be more responsive to the throttle now that she can breath and exhale.

Next mod should be a new drivers side floor pan to eliminate the deep dent under your accellarator pedal. Ha-Ha-Ha
