I am working on a 51 f1. Can anyone tell me what the material is thats applied to the inside of the doors. I think it is for rust prevention and sound deadening. Some of the material has come loose. What can I use to replace this with?
It looks like a form of tar to me.Only now it is rock hard and coming off. My 49 was like that too. I didn't put anything in place of that stuff. In my opinion it really isn't worth it. But i never drive mine in the rain or bad weather.Maybe at thick layer of undercoating wouldn't hurt.
If you are wanting to reproduce the "tar" on the indside of the doors, use a "Shutz Gun" and rubberized rocker guard.
In my '50, the original stuff has completely hardened and breaks like glass. No sound deadening or water proofing quality left there.
Remember that when it rains, water runs down the windows and into your doors. Properly painting or sealing both sides of the metal is definately advised.
