Hello all, Ive just been given a 64 Ford 350 by my father in law (does this mean he hates me? ) We are going to be towing it back from Illinois to home in Boone, NC. In trying to make arrangements......curious what this truck will weigh? It is a dually with dump flat bed with stake sides. Im not sure on the engine.
An educated guess would be great. Thanks. I look forward to getting it up and going. I think it'll be a dandy firewood truck for me.
luke-gr Welcome to FTE the nations #1 Ford truck tech support site.
Is there any reason not to try driving the truck back? Unless there are some known reasons, it probably would make the trip ok. The man couldn't hate you too bad to give you an ol Ford truck.
I would tow with another 1 ton with some poundage in the rear to help stop and not jack knife. A PSD crew cab would be minimum. That dumper is going to be heavy
Thanks for the welcome, guys. I am excited. Ive owned a 79F100 and an 89F150. Towed a Trans Am back from inlaws house with the F150.
John, It's 600 miles and about 10.5 hours in a car. The truck has been parked in the barn for at least a couple years. Im too leery as to it's roadworthiness. Too far from home to gamble, imo.
Arctic, what's a PSD?
I have access to a nice tandem trailer with electric brakes, but am having trouble rounding up a tow vehicle. My business had a 350 PowerStroke until a few months ago. I'll figure something out. Again, any guesses on the weight of that thing?
I look forward to hanging around and learning after I get her home.
The best i can say on weight is HEAVEY. Ain't no trans am.
PSD= Power Stroke Diesel
I have pulled load like that with my UNI.
On a trailer with brakes and a FE 390/C6 with trans cooler.
'anything happens, your fault my fault, nobodies fault'. and some one could die.
It takes a lot of experience to pull a load like that.
Luke, I lived in Durham for 35 years or so, got tired of being stolen from and moved to the much smaller community of Creedmoor.
I suspect the truck will weigh in the 8,000 lb. range. Your inlaw could drive it to a local feed mill, garbage dump etc. and have it weighed.
There just aren't but so many things that can go wrong with an old truck like that. New belts and hoses, tune up, maybe new brake wheel cylinders, and of course the tires. Figure on driving secondary roads 50-55 mph and I bet the ol truck would make it just fine. Since daylight is shorter, you might want to make it a two day trip. If it were me I'd go for it all in one unless I had a relitave to visit along the way. Your wife could follow in the car, it would be a fun trip. IMHO
John, thanks for the stab on the weight. Just curious and that is about what I thought. Will keep you guys posted. We are traveling the week of/after Christmas.
