Post Testing Fuel Pump

I've got a 2003 Eddie Bauer Expedition that is blowing the Fuel Pump relay switch. From searching on the net I think the fuel pump is bad, pulling to many amps shorting out the relay. Before ordering a new Fuel Pump I'd like to test that theory. Right now the only way I can think of to test the fuel pump is to use a meter at the Relay location and see how many amps the pump is pulling. Any better ideas?

just remember that to test current (amperage) the meter must be connected in series with the circuit. If you're going to do it at the Relay location, you will have to remove the relay, and put the meter between the 78 and 30 pins. 30 is hot at all times, and 78 is the output to the fuel pump.

If you have an amp clamp, clamp it around one of the wires in the fuel pump circuit, turn on the pump, and read the amps on your meter. Better yet, put the amp clamp output into an oscilloscope and watch the current draw over time.
