Actron Testers can damage OBD-I PCMs
Hello: Thanks everyone for your help over the past week. I just got off the phone with the Actron company and the person there told me that -- according to one of their engineers -- the more expensive testers, like the CP9145 can damage the PCM in an older OBD-I Ford. How does this happen? Well, it just dawned on me that when the kid at Autozone hooked up the tester, he forgot to connect the pigtail plug into it, which is actually a gound wire. Somehow, not hooking up the pigtail wire to the CP9145's adaptor causes an internal short with the voltage regulators inside the PCM. Since Autozone made this mistake, they will be paying me for my trouble, which probably will be in the form of a store credit. I don't want to give them an ultimatum, but in any case, guys, please be careful to hook up the pigtail wire if using this Actron device. Steve
