Overdrive

Hello all, I was with my buddy this weekend on a fishing trip and he is a fellow SD owner and he was talking about the overdrive function. He said that around town the overdrive should be off due to transmission issues. I know that on the highway you want to enable overdrive and during towing/plowing that it should be off. Is this true. Any help is appreciated.

If it is a later model (new body style) truck I would not turn off the overdrive unless it is searching for a gear. My 04 has an OD switch but it is for tow haul mode, this changes shift points and helps with engine braking. My 94 has OD and I don't tow with it on if the trans is searching for a gear. When I plow with the 94 it doesn't get close to shifting to OD so I don't mess with it.

I severly doubt it will ever cause you a problem either way. Keeping it out of overdrive will keep your RPMs up if you need a bit more power, but it will burn a little more gas.
