Towing Hooks (mounting?)

Hello:

I picked up a set of heavy duty towing hooks (like the ones you see in AutoKrafters / LMC truck, etc.) to install on my 85 F-350 2x4. Each hook has 2 bolts. The are factory holes in the frame that match up perfectly on the front of the truck. I have the factory bumper as well. The problem is I cannot mount the hooks as the bumper interfers.

Has anyone successfully added tow hooks to the front of their F-Series? If so, what did you do in terms of modificatins? It seems the only way I can get them to fit is to add 3-4 inches of steel (like a spacer w/ 2 holes drilled throught them) so that the hooks drop below the front bumper. Not sure I want to do this as it might put to much stress on the bolts. Any suggestions. I used to have a heavy guage angle iron running across the front of the frame under the bumper. I may just put that back on.

Thanks for any help.

I would just take a grinder and notch the bumper so the hooks will clear.

Thanks. I enjoy what you have done w/ your truck. By the way, looking at your truck, it looks like you have black tow hooks mounted sideways or is that something else I am seeing?

Take care

If you don't want to mod the bumper you might add a piece of small channel iron as a spacer and go with a grade 8 bolts & nuts. Not sure how much you need to clear. But use a spacer anyway.

It's metal rod someone heated and bent to form hooks. They still point down, it's just the pic that makes them look sideways. It would be nicer to have them sideways, then the strap wouldn't fall off.

I made a bracket out of half inch steel, bolted that to the frame, and then the hooks to the bracket. They stick out just below the bumper. I might have some pics in my gallery.

Thanks Boss:

I think I am going to do that vs. notch the bumper. I just put a deluxe fromt bumper w/ guards and I did not want to cut it up. Nie truck by the way - I like it black vs white. Mr 85 F-350 is 2x4 and I was just going to put the hooks on that. I just picked up a 86 F-250 4x4 w/ 33k miles and I am sure I will be "pulling" my F-350 out of the muddy areas as it does not do that well on my property, but kicks but when it comes to pulling a horse trailer down the highway!
