I have a 1957 F-350 with the 272 Y block. I am wondering how hard it would be to swapp the master cylinder out with an 80's ford or chevy? Also does anyone know where to find brake parts for this truck? Will napa or carquest have them? One last thing, anyone know where I can find a front fenders and a new grill for the beast
Don't know about the master cylinder swap but look at the FTE on-line parts catalog for your brake parts first. If you can't find some for the big guy there, try Joblot Automotive (www.joblotauto.com) in New York. I've got an F-250 with the same 272 and even other Ford part vendors for the older trucks will advise you to go to Joblot if you have a truck bigger than an F1 or F-100. Give them a call and ask for James.
You should be able to swap the late model brakes if you are ready for some work. Late models have front discs, which require a different master cylender and proportioning valve. If you can scrounge all the late model parts, install them and try it. You may have to add an adjustable valve to fine tune it, front to rear. Or put discs on the front. There is one more part, can't think of what it's called, but it keeps a small amount of preload pressure on the drums so all 4 grab at the same time. Race car guys use them when swapping brakes.
As for your need for front fenders and grille, lots o' luck! I have a salvage yard near me that may have the fenders. If I see some I'll write you back. I've been looking for a grille for my '58, no luck. If you really need fenders, e-mail me and I'll look around. 460 joe
