engine/trans swap('94's)

hello everyone,
this is my grand scheme- please tell me if I'm nuts!!

I have a 94 f250 4x4 with a nice 5.8 engine in it(rest is shot)
I also have a 94 f150 4x2 with a bad straight 6, but a good 5 speed man. trans (trans code M)-rest is shot also.
I want to take the transmission from the 150, bolt it on the 5.8 and put it all in a '69 pontiac lemans. Beautiful car that just needs reliability.

I have two big questions. First- Will the transmission bolt right on? Second- How about the wiring and computer? Is it possible to get all the wiring/computer/etc out of the truck? I don't want to go through all this work if only to find out I cant get the wiring to work out.

Time and fabrication isn't an issue here-it's going to be a long cold winter and the shop will be empty.Money is an issue here- I have these three vehicles and want to spend a little as possible.

tia for replies, jim

Hi Jim!
Sounds like a fun project. My first concern would be the transmission itself. If this is an M5R1/2 tranny and you are going to use it as a daily driver, it should be able to handle the torque. If you plan on running it hard (on the street), this might not be the transmission for you. I'm sure there are gearheads here that can give you a heads-up on this swap. From what I have seen on my truck ('89 5.0 2WD M5R2), I would call this a light duty transmission. Just my two cents.....

It'll work ok, the M5R2 is plenty tough enough. And it's not hard to fix or replace parts. The only bugaboo I can forsee is the shifter location. On trucks, the shifter is in the middle top of the trans. This might put it under the dash on the Pontiac car, because the cowl dimensions are usually longer on a car. It could work, if you make up a shifter with a serious dogleg in it. There is a version of the M5R2 that was used in the late model T-birds, 89-95 or so, and it had the shift tower mounted above the tailshaft. Very strange when you see them side by side.

The 5.8 will bolt to the M5R2. The wiring in the F250 will work fine. You will need to fab up an efi spec fuel pump and lines to feed the EFI. Also, be sure to incorporate the inertia switch for safety. The PCM might not be happy if it was originally driving an automatic, but it will still work. (Might have a check engine light)
