i have a 49 ford and my drive spring broke on my starter.
i got a new on but now my starter makes a lot of racket
and will not start my truck with out a jump. did i do
something wrong? how can i fix it
I've never had your particular starter apart, but I have noticed on others I have taken apart, it's very easy to get them into a bind in the motor bushings when putting them back together. You may have to take it back apart to check everything and then when you put it back together, take a rubbed mallet and beat on each end of the starter to position the shaft in the center of the end bell bushings.
You'll have to pull it out again, and then check to make sure everything is where it belongs. I once failed to get the bolt 'keepers' crimped right and lost a bolt in the ring gear - not fun.
There's only one way the spring can go on the shaft, with a bolt in each end. Make sure you have the right bolt in the right hole - it'll be obvious which one takes the bolt with the projection on the end. Make sure the keepers get flattened tight against the nut - they keep them from backing out.
When you re-install the starter, move the bendix out against the end of the shaft and try to push it in past the ring gear that way. You'll have to lean the case toward the motor to clear it, and bolt it up tight. That's about the only tip I can give. You didn't loose any spring pieces in the bell housing did you? The bolt I lost in there made a horrible racket and I had to pull the oil pan and dust shield to retreive it.
Good luck and let us know how it turns out.
Tim
ps. for those not familiar, the bendix spring assembly are external on all flathead engines. The case does not have to be disassembled.
