should say on the cover of the engine or i could be wrong but the rear axle tells which engine you have the smaller axle is the 4.6, the larger axle is the 5.4

Thank you for you rapid response. I've seen pictures where it says on the cover on top of the engine. Unfortunately, I seem to be missing that part.

8.8 rear axle is the 4.6l... and the 5.4 got the 9.75 rear axle... the tag should say some where.... if anything else the 9.75 has some big supports that mount it to the axle tubes... and the 4.6 has some dinky things that support it to the axle tubes... without a tape measure and recalling from simple memory id say the supports for the axle from the 4.6 would be like 2 in roughley and they 5.4 would be 3 in or better...hope this helps

VIN will have engine code. Either the 8th or 10th digit...sorry I can't recall which. One designates the engine, t'other is the code for the year.

You nailed it. Thank you. The 8th digit is a W which equals 4.6.

Thanks everyone.

Here's the easier way to tell when you are out on the road.

Here's a pic of the Ford 8.8 that comes behind the 4.6L:

And here is a pic of the 9.75 that comes behind the 5.4L: Kinda small...but you can see the difference
