Hello I have a 1990 ford Aerostar with a 3.0. Vehicle stopped running while going down road at 60mph. got towed home. I am getting fuel at the regulator and pump engages when key is turned on. Went to first major problem with fords replace the ignition module on the distributer, no luck won't fire. replaced cap rotor plugs wires, still no fire. Checked timing at TDC and found rotor to be about 1/2 inch off center of post, led me to believe timing chain jumped. Replaced timing chain and gears. There was slop in the old one. Vehicle will still not fire. Engine is turning over normally have compression. Sprayed starting fluid in throttle body but to no evail. Vechile will still not fire. If anyone has any ideas I'd really appreciate it. Also Throttle position sensor was replaced in the past, vehicle has 190,000 miles and was running like a champ before this happened, Didn't burn oil, or any other fluid lose. Would really like to get it running again because it does great for what I do.
Please stop throwing money at it until you know how much and in which direction to throw it. Other people here can help with diagnosis better than I but STOP THROWING MONEY!!
I always like to check the three thing necessary for engine to run. Compression, fuel and spark. My bet is a spark problem and I know the other guys here will be of great service.
Ok, so is there spark? I would check this before checking fuel pressure, just pull a spark plug and hold it about half and inch or so from a good ground (hold it with a well insulated tool). If the spark is well defined and bluish, then you know that it and its components are good. IF it is yellow, intermitent, or non-existent, then the problem is in the ignition system. Once you check for spark, we can help you further.
