To much smoke ?

Hi i have an 95 psd with 150,000 miles on it . I read in a diesel magizine that a way to check your rings was to start your motor and pull your oil filler cap of and see how was smoke was coming out . Mine has a fair amout ,like if i shine a trouble light into the oil fill hole i can see the inside of the vavle cover but its hard though all the smoke. Anyone else check this ? is it too much smoke for the miles ? Plus my truck burns about 2 quarts of oil ,its winter were i live i heard you burn some oil in the winter ,plus my oil plug leaks some . Thanks !!!!!!

Can't recall ever seeing a diesel not smoke on startup when its cold. Depending on how many miles you put on before you have to add a couple quarts I would not be alarmed, it'll burn a little bit when it's cold until it warms up and seals things up in the cyls. I ran mine all winter (96 F350 w/ 140000) last year but only put a couple thousand on her added a quart about January and another in March but afterwards we had an early warm-up and it didn't need another drop till I changed it in August, ran rotella sythetic. I only put about 5-6000 miles on per year and figure the sythetic will only need changed once a year.

Two quarts between oil changes one after about 2500 and would need another at 5000 but thats when i do my oil changes .Yes mine smokes at cold start up but they all do . my concern is just when the trucks up to temp i still have a fair amount of smoke getting past the rings into the vavle cover .? just wondering if its to much smoke or if that is normal ? thanks !!!
