Im looking into buying a 2.3 liter turbo diesel ranger. I would like 4x4 and a 5spd. what are some of the things i need to watch out for and about how much $ am i needing to expect to pay for one?
i did just find one a few days ago for $500 in michiagan i wanted to go look at. even if they are unreliable im in school to be a diesel mechanic so it will help me out.
Well...first things first, check the mileage. Diesels are good far into the high miles, but even they do wear out. Do a compression check if you can. Make sure it's good and even.
See how the transmission shifts obviously...I'm not sure if it'll be a hydraulic clutch setup or not, if it is make sure it's got no leaks anywhere.
I'd do a good one-over of the turbo...make sure it's still functioning properly.
Check the 4x4 and make sure it works good...
And watch out for rust, I'm sure with a truck that old in MI it'll have quite a bit.
With your mechanic's knowledge, should be a good buy.
16diesel let us know what the truck is like, i saw the same one for sale but decided i dont need any more vehicles to maintain. the whole cost of parts thing didnt help either.
I have always wanted one too, Ford did not make many new and they are real rare today 20+ years later.
THe engine was a Mitshibushi 2.3L turbo four also used in their truck and the Dodge D50.
I think the better solution is to find a small turbo four diesel and transplant it into a newer Ranger. I would like to try a 2.8L from the Jeep Liberty, but they most likely want a mint for an engine.
