77 Cluch floor boot

My truck is a 77 F250 with a standard 4 speed. When I got the truck the cluch rod boot that goes through the floor was rotten so I replaced it.That is only 2-3 yrs ago and this one is falling apart.I don't want to say sponsers names,But I think it should last longer then that. They are cheep enough,But that is not the issue.I can't just go buy it.I have to order it
Is this a common problem with this boot?

I don't mind naming names. ;)

I bought a bunch of rubber stuff from Ford. :/

The new stuff went bad in just a couple years and looked as bad as the old stuff did after ~22 years.
NOS mean ny new-bought-stuff was made back when my original parts were made? :)

Anyway here I am again in the same boat needing to replace window runs and all sorts of stuff.

As far as the clutch rod boot goes... yeah BTDT twice, with boots from Ford and the last time stuffed a really old VW brake rod boot over the rod and into the hole left by the missing springy part of the FORD NOS boot.

Was looking at it the other day... the junky VW boot still looks like new.
It was made from EDPM maybe? :)

Let's blame it on the gov't. What do you say? :)
The EPA made the rubber makers change to making a lesser product. ;)

Angry

My new Ford one didn't last a year on a highboy I had, and the cab mounts and floor were solid.

Try this next time....When I replaced mine I coated the clutch rod and the boot with a good coating of Vasoline which reduced the amount of movement between the clutch rod and boot.

The vaseline idea prompts my question...
What actually will preserve the rubber?
It seems to be more a product of decay rather than being worked IME.

The VW brake-boot is still like new, and I ain't kiddin.
It was an old sucker when I stuffed it in there too.

I got some left over EDPM foam rubber laying in with the rest of my junk... been laying there for years and years and ever-once in a while pick it up and check it out. It still looks like new too.

My 1979 boot was shot, so I ordered a new through D.C. and in four months is was falling apart so they gave me a credit and I ordered a second and it is now falling apart after about six months. I called and they said its been to long since the purchase date to do any thing, so I ordered a third one and will try it. The original lasted 27 years. I asked if they had a bad batch of rubber and they said no, quit weird.

A Friend of mine at Ford mentioned this trick. Coat the rubber periodicly with Silicone lubricant. This will make the rubber last a lot longer. It helps keep the rubber from cracking, and weathering.

He also mentioned that it was their practice to spray them down with silicone lube to help ease installation of rubber parts just prior to installation.

Unhappy

Early this year I also purchased a new clutch floor boot (a 20 dlls expense) from the "bucking horse Ford SUV cementery" vendor for my '78 F100, and in a few months it ripped apart even when I had coated it with vaseline. I think I am going to make me one with a different material (like plastic or even chrome-tanned or latigo leather, which I believe will last for at least a couple of years). I tell you, they don't make automotive rubber like they used to do 20-30 years ago! Raul

ArmorAll is a commonly available rubber preservative that will not deteriorate the rubber the way petroleum products (i.e. vaseline) will.

I was told the exact opposite by my auto shop teacher back in 1988.

Silicone lubricant is what I recomend using.
