When replacing the idler pulley...do I need to get one of the pulley removal tools where it grabs the edges and pushes the center to get it off? Or is there some other way I'm not aware of?
Do you mean the belt tensioner pulley or the idler pulley? The idler pulley is held on with one bolt and has a factory packed bearing. I've never paid any attention to the tensioner pulley. I'd have to go look at mine.
I'm going to try and replace it tommorow, I'll probably just rent the tool anyways. I mean I get my money back when I take it back, so no reason not to really.
Your truck a little older so it might be different, but on my '02 i took off the belt using a regular wrench tn the bolt thats on the tensioner and then using a wrench i took out the bolt that goes through the middle of the idler puller and it came right off. Put the new one on snake on a new belt and all the squeeling was gone.
As simple as it is...I may just replace it in the O'Reilly parking lot, so if I need the tool I can just run inside and get it. I'm hoping that it just pops off like Jim's.
Now...with my luck, it'll fight me tooth and nail.
It should just slide right off once you take the bolt out... maybe tap it slightly with a hammer. I've never had one seize up on me... but there's a first for everything
