the tranny is gone in my 1991 f350 super cab dually 2wd 7.3 diesel, I have the overdrive on and off switch, I am just wondering what other years and makes carry the same transmission that I can use? How do you find out which transmissions are interchangeable with others? Thank You for your help very much.
You can find a trans as well as other applications by going to car-parts.com. You can find trannies in your area with it, and it works nicely to show you what years it works with.
You will need the E40D from a diesel truck.......to get the right gear ratio.
One thing to look out for would be Not getting a stock trans ie not upgraded to todays improvements. I would either have yours rebuilt by a top notch rebuilder like Brians truck shop or at the least have a Ford rebuilt installed. Which ever you do ensure it is updated to the 94+ technology.
a diesel will have the same gears. The case doesn't mate up to the diesel motor if it is a gas trans. You would have to do a total teardown to replace the gears. Converter is easy, you take it off one, by simply pulling, and position it on the other. It isn't held by anything but being sandwiched and bolted to the flexplate.
is there a conversion that you can do to make the gas trans bolt up to diesel or am I pretty much stuck with the diesel, also I read that there is a quick conversion for 4 wheel drive trans to 2 wheel drive, has anyone done this?
I've never done it but I have read that you can take the internals for a gas tranny and swap into your diesel tranny though you'd need diesel tq-converter and valvebody, at the least. When i rebuilt my c6 the only difference internaly between diesel and gas was a couple springs in valve body and i think the size of 1 or 2 valves. When you say your tranny is gone, its missing or just need to be rebuilt, if the case is good i'd just have yours rebuilt with heavyduty internals.
Unless you just can't afford a rebuild, I wouldnt put a junkyard e4od in without getting it rebuilt anyway.

the diesel trannies are readily available, so there really isn't anything for a conversion... the internals likely would swap, but if you're going to do that, might as well rebuild it proper.
