Question Adding interior under dash lighting

Remember when cars had "courtesy lights" under the dash that would flood the interior floor at night with low level lighting when a door was opened or you manually turned them on?
With all the low amp draw led lighting available now, I want to add some under dash lighting. That in itself is no problem; however, I do want these new lights to come on/off with the dome lights when a door is manually opened or key fob operated.
So....my question is, where do I splice in for 12v power to accomplish this?
Thanks, guys.

I would splice into the leads that go to Overhead Dome lights. Just an idea.

I agree with ccerniglia. That should cover both concerns. Let us know how it turns out

The dome light is black with lt blue tracer and can be found in the bundle of wires going through the drivers door channel/rocker panel. Tap into that with a relay and you'll be good to go! I did the same mod, only the lights are mounted on the frame so some nice light spills out on the ground around the truck. It's great for seein curbs and such.

i. Mine's an '06
2.Wire color can sure change from year to year(unfortunately)
3.Showing my nominal level of electrical prowess, I ask, Why the need of a relay if I'm using LED's with very low amperage draw?

I really am hot to this project but want to get it right first time around.
Need mo help here.........

I missed the part about LEDs... my appologies. With LEDs a relay probably isn't necessary, but can't hurt either I believe the black with lt blue is for 05 and 06... but I can't verify as I have an 00. I got the info from www.the12volt.com Great site for this type of resource. Good luck with the project. Take you're time and I'm sure everything will come out just fine the first time around Give us some pics when you're done!

I installed a LED light in my overhead console to shine down on my cup holder. I had to install a 300 ohm resistor to keep from blowing up the LED. The one I bought was like 2.1 volts or so. It is 2300 mcd so it is pretty bright but it throws a really cool blue light on my cup holder.

Not trying to hijack. Just wanted to throw in the bit about a resistor with the LED. I know you can get LEDs with resistors already built in and set up for 12v. Just make sure you know how to calculate the resistance you need. My brother helped me so dont ask! I am an electrical imbicel.

Wink Did it . . .

I did this install in my "06 and tapped the Blk w/ Blue tracer from the driver kick panel. It also runs my running board lights (King Ranch). They work fine and come on like you want.

Here are pics of both footwells . . .

Eggzaktly what and where did you get those lights? What I see in your pics looks about what I have in mind, so if you don't mind, I sure would appreciate some source data on the hardware.

Also, how does the driver's kick panel come out. I'm a little goosey about yanking on stuff.
Thanks for your assist.

Wink Here u go . . .

A friend of mine gave me the set as he sells them some where. They are amber strips about 16 inches long. Several of the online parts company, Stylin Concepts, Summit Racing, Real Truck (Sponser), etc. sell them.

Drivers kick panel has a plastic push pin that holds it to the wall. You can't miss it. Also have to peel back the rubber door gasket and pop up the door floor channel cover. It is an easy take out. You can even reuse the push pin as it is a big one.

All the wires are just there in a bundle so work your way thru them until you find the interior light common Black w/ light blue tracer.

Get er dun . . .
