About a week ago I was under the truck (2001 F150 2WD, 4.6 & 5 spd Manual) doing a routine oil change and noticed oil leaking from, what I thought was, the rear main oil seal. Didn't think much about it. But yesterday went out to go to work and ...no clutch! I knew instantly where that leaking oil was coming from! Then I was surprised to find out I have to pull the tranny to change the slave cylinder out! Never pulled one on this model before. All my exeriences have been with 79s or older. Any things to look out for? Tips, tricks? How do you get that slave cylinder hydraulic hose disconnected from the trans?
Well I got it changed out this weekend....what a poorly designed system. The slave cylinder was completely made of plastic! I guess when I get the next 80K on her I will know how to do it. While I was in there I went ahead and siliconed the three rubber grommets before they became brittle and hard. If anyone wants any info on how to change a slave cylinder drop me a line. The part only cost me $33 at Advanced Auto + the new rear seal I installed.
Sorry that no one replied before now.
Good to hear that you got it fixed.
The slave cylinders used to be made of aluminum and plastic and had more problems than the all aluminum ones do. I used to replace tons of them on the late 80s, early 90s trucks.
Doing the rear seal at the same time was a good move.
Well after all this work under the truck I am getting a malfunctioning O2 sensor fault. Checked the plugs and all hooked up but one is a little beat up by the heat shield after all the work. Which O2 sensor is this one per the code? Anyone know? There 2 sensors per side.
Thanks for the info. That is the sensor I banged up with the heat sheild while under the truck. Should I go to Auto Zone or go with the sensor from the dealership??
How long did it take? A friend was quoted $400 for the job so I checked this site to see if R&R of the trans was required. Your post gave me the answer. Any tips and tricks would be appreciated. Thanks.
As you found out, yes the transmission has to come out to replace the slave cylinder.
Not sure what prices are like there compared to here but $400 would be reasonable here. On a 2WD it's probably about a 3-4 hour job according to the flat rate manual.
