Do you have the actual code and not just the description?
If it's a P0455 the common causes are a bad canister vent solenoid, mud in the evap canister and/or broken wiring to the canister vent solenoid.
The canister and solenoid are above and behind the rear axle, under the truck box.
You can check the canister vent solenoid with an ohmmeter. It should be 48-65 ohms with the connector off.
Also check the wiring between it and the frame for breaks, corrosion etc.
no theres a seperate code listed for the gas cap. according to the code book this is something diff.
A loose or faulty seal on the gas cap is a gross evap leak. That's why your owner's manual specifically tells you to check the gas cap if your CEL/SES comes on.
It would be extraordinarily helpful to your own cause if you specifically identified your vehicle. There are year-to-year differences and even variations within years for various sub-models. It is obvious we are not dealing with a 1984 vehicel here....

It gets pretty simple if you smell gas when you get out of the truck and when your walking by the fuel tank cap. I hate to say this really I do but, Woops dare it is. But then again if your smelling fumes in the cab, and not outside then you have an under the hood leak, if only the outside and not near the cap then your on a line hunt follow your nose, and do it with loww fuel in the tank and immediately after a good long run

Sounds like you haven't any experience or knowledge of OBD-II systems and what the Evaporative Emissions system actually is....
Actually I had the same code, Drove me nutz lookin for it, I checked all possible! And cap was new ( prior theft )' But changed anyway... code and odor went away
I just got a P0442 code. Its not my gas cap its new. My truck has given problems with this system for the last 60k. Every time I fix one part another goes out. I'll check the solenoid & canester again. I'm sick of this system. The fuel senser in the tank went out last & fried my ecu. I can't believe how much trouble this system has been.
