Just wondering if anyone else here that lives in where there is winter weather if you ever have your parking brake freeze up. It has turned cold here in mid missouri over the last couple of days and I have been having problems with my parking brake sticking on. Today I parked it and out of habit I applied the parking brake and when I went to leave I had to lock my truck in 4 low and force the wheel to move before it would free up. In 2 wheel drive I just spun the passenger tire so I locked in the 4L and drug that wheel about 10 feet before it broke loose. Do you think saturating it with WD-40 would help displace the moisture that is causing it to freeze up? Any other grand suggestions?
Mine froze up about two weeks ago. What I found was that the protective wrap had rubbed through and allowed water to seep into the cable. I doubt any amount of WD-40 will break it loose! I had to disconnect the cable at the split, as I forgot and stepped on it after backing off the star wheel. Anyway, it was the left rear cable on a 2003 FX4 II with 81,000 miles. I use the ebrake all the time (manual trans), so it was not from lack of use. A new cable is on order.
Ummmm, you should never use the parking brake in freezing weather unless you are flat out desireous of/begging for freezing problems. However, for those that insist on using it anyway you can look forward to crappy winter days ahead, at a time and date to be determined, on a schedule you can't control, and it more than likely it will be inconvenient. After a few rounds of a frozen parking brake setup, you'll remember what I said in my first sentence. Live and learn. And yes, I've enjoyed living in snow country for nearly 30 years and no, I have never had a parking brake freeze and no, I have never had a vehicle roll away (park smart).
