Buying my first Excursion and need your help..?????

Hello guys, First let me introduce myself....my name is Steve and I live in the NYC Metro area.....I am no stranger to Ford 4X4's I have two full size Broncos, and both are 1993 models. I dont do too much wheeling so I have set up my Bronco for what I use it for.....a daily driver that does see some off road use....mostly just trails and mud during hunting season in the Fall and fishing season in the Spring. I have been a member here at FTE for some time now as well as a few other forums that deal with FSB's (full size Bronco's).

Ok.....now to my question(s). I want to buy a Excursion.....and of course I would like to know specifically what to look out for on a used one. I would like to score one with low mileage (under 50K) and with a diesel. I am not sure what is the better engine the 6.0 or 7.3 so I will have to go with what you suggest.

Other than that I am wide open to whatever you guys have to say......like I said remember I am not planning on lifting it way up or anything, but I would like to mod the turbo diesel up a bit, and like go with some new suspension components or anything to improve the ride (if ness) and reliability....and performance for 80% on and 20% off road daily driver.

I do use my daily driver to haul my dog Bismarck, a 4 year old GSD (we call him Blondie) around so the 3rd seat will have to go.
If you would like to see some pics of my Bronco and stuff just click on the link in my sig line.

Oh......and THANKS VERY MUCH in advance for any help/advice/knowledge you can send my way!

Come on are you guys kidding me or what???? Or could you be saying that the Ex is so tough there are no known problem areas.,,,,,?????

Just from reading I have come to the conclusion that I would like the 7.3L PSD if I can find a unit with low mileage that checks out.

So come on guys......what am I looking for here.....what are the most likely areas that develop problems....weak spots.....stuff like that.....help me out here????

Ball joints, squeaky body mounts and sway bar bushings, door lock actuators, steering wander, and crummy factory shocks seem to be the common problems that I know of. Been the owner of an Ex for only 9 months, so I'm sure some others know more...

If you can afford the diesel you're on the right track. I'd probably lean toward the 7.3 too, there's some scary 6.0 stories out there.

Streetgang,

First of all Welcome to Ex world!!

First of all, Why is your heart set on a diesel?

Go to the V-10 forum and then go to the 6.0L forum. You'll see a big difference!!

I have an 02 Ex with the V-10 and by far it is the BEST engine (drivetrain) I've ever owned!! Period!!

I would steer clear of a 6.0L engine. If you can find a low mileage 7.3L maybe.
I would have an carfax done and also an Oasis ck done.

If this is your daily driver and you're not hauling loads day in and day out, the diesel really makes no sense IMO.. You'll really never get back your $$'s worth out of it. Maintenance and gas alone..

You should be able to get an easy 250,000 miles out of a well kept V-10 with very little than maintenance items.

If you want more pep to haul with, get the 4.10 or the 4.30 gear ratio. I have the 3.73 and I'm fine towing 10k no problems..

Hope this helps..

Well I just got out of a 03 Ex with a 6.0 and it was not something you wanted to count on. I just traded it for a 03 with the 7.3 and I am much happier with it. I don't think you will go wrong by getting a good used 7.3, even look at some with 80k miles or so the engines are built to last. By the way are you a K-9 unit, for wich department.
