Issue with 2000 7.3 stalling

I have been having an issue with a 2000 7.3 PSD. The only modification made to the truck is that a Hypertech chip was put in 5 years ago. The truck currently has 139,000 miles on it. It has ran great up to now.

The truck will start up fine and run just fine unless I get the truck below a 1/4 of a tank, or when I fill the truck up. When I put fuel in the truck, it will run down the road for a while, then bump, as if it lost all power. It will then continue down the road just fine. Also, when driving for a while and stopping at a stop sign, or just letting it idle, it will intermittently lose power. I will start it back up, and it will run just fine.

I recently took the truck to a dealer, and to a diesel shop and they said that they couldn't reproduce the issue, so I was out of luck. Just to be safe, I took the truck in and got the fuel filter changed, oil changed, transmission fluids changed, etc. The truck is still doing the same thing.

I am getting to my wits end with this, and have not been able to get any help from shops. I was hoping that I could post here and see if any of you have seen this type of issue, or how I could get it fixed.

Thank you.

Sounds just like a CPS going bad. About $100 for a replacement from International or about $175 from Ford.

There is a number of problems that ive been fighting on the similiar issues. First off is to define all the circumstance that cause the problem. Many shops have lost the ability to TROUBLESHOOT. In the ol days they had contest for this stuff.
What is the outside temp
How long does it take for your oil pressure to come up upon 1st startup. (watch that)
Are you sure its when almost empty or all full?
Have you checked the ipr nut to make sure the sensor isnt loose?
Preventative maintainance to clean that.
Lets start there and repost your finding here

Take the chip out, try it then, yeah, I know, what a dog but see if the problem persists. Also, CPS can be had on EBay for $50-60 bucks. Might want to order one ASAP. Don't get a parts store variety, asking for trouble there. Get a factory one. Most of us here have a spare. If that does not cure it, you will have a spare. Believe me, you will likely end up using it if you have the truck for any period of time.

Finally, welcome the FTE.

Thanks for the quick responses.

What is the outside temp
(Between 72-78 degrees this past few days when it was occuring)

How long does it take for your oil pressure to come up upon 1st startup. (watch that)
(I will have to look at this and get back)

Are you sure its when almost empty or all full?
(I have noticed that it occurs much more frequent when the tank is in these two positions. Once it occurs after it is full, it normally wont happen for a while, until it gets low on fuel. In fact, I just drove it 300 miles with no incident today...)

Have you checked the ipr nut to make sure the sensor isnt loose?
(I have not checked this, but did just have the truck in to replace all fluids and filters. Would it have been tightened, or at least checked, then?)

Thanks again.

When it "Bumps" does the tach drop faster than the motor could possibly stop spinning (like you cut the key off)?

CPS about a 15 minute 60 buck fix if you DIY, over 200 at the stealership
Before just jumping and replacing it check the harness for shorts and the connector for corrosion. But that is normally how they start, it will get more frequent untill it dies for good.

I concur, as you can tell from my previous post, but I would still try the chip thing too. No cost to you.

I almost jumped that one on you Alan. That took 10 minutes, I knew where you were going.
