Electric cooling fan

I want to put an electric cooling fan on my '50 streetrod, and have a couple of questions.

Is the fan supposed to push or pull?

Is 5" of clearance from the rad to the water pump pulley enough?

Anybody found one complete with wiring and temp switch at a decent price?

Nice truck! The fan's only purpose is to move air thru the radiator. Push if its in front of the rad, pull if its behind in the stock location. Clearance depends on the depth of the fan unit you buy. Get your rad dimensions (for the shroud) and clearance, then check what's out there. Mine is still stock, including generator so I can't point you in a particular direction. - tim

Electric cooling fan

My 2 cents,

I researched the whole CFM/fan size/engine HP etc and found that buying a fan that would meet and exceed all the calculations woudl be too expensive. ($250++ minimum)

i decided to go by trial and error. I have both a pusher and a puller. It works really good for me, this is what I have. I went to a yard and pulled a fan from an import, can’t even remember what car, was about a 14 inch, tested it pulled good air, the car was 4 cylinder though, 15 bucks. Then went to Pep boys and got a 16 inch Hayden fan, turned the fan around to turn it into a pusher, 70 bucks. Then I went with the adjustable thermostat, from Hayden also, 30 bucks. I was looking at another thermostat, (online product, can’t remember name) that would leave the fans on when the vehicle was stopped and would stop the fans once it cooled the engine/water, then started to think what if they don’t stop and battery runs out. Anyhow, one puller, one pusher, with an adjustable thermo set at 170 degrees, Cools the V8 down quick. On the spacing, the inside fan is about two inches away from the pulley. Email me if you need more info, or pics. reycasanova@netscape.net

The truck in the gallery is not the streetrod. That one is restored original. By the way, Old Blue will be in the Early Ford V-8 Club invitational show this weekend in Peoria, Il. If anyone is in the area, be sure to stop and say Hi. The streetrod is my project (or as my better half would say "moneypit") that I am working on now.
