Since I am not authorized to search, I must appologize ahead of time for any duplications.
I have a '99 expedition with a 5.4. It began revving and running rough today with no warning (can here a slight miss at idle). No warning dash lights or anything. Had a '98 model act similar but a dash warning light came on. fix was to replace a coil (under warranty).
Hence my questions: Are there any common causes of this? If it is a bad coil, is there a way of diagging which coil without putting on a diag machine?
If it's a coil it will probably throw and engine missfire cylinder X code. Hold down the trip reset button on the dash and put the ignition in run. That will display dtc's. Or take it to your local national auto parts store and they can hook up to a scanner.
Hey Bridge, that's the first time I've heard of using the trip reset button to read DTC's; I had an old Plymouth Voyager that you could do a key-on-key-off procedure (leaving it in key-on) and it would flash the CEL a certain number of times corresponding to the DTC in a chart. Is this the same thing for Ford Expy 5.4's? THanks for your expertise and help.
Guys, the odometer can NOT, REPEAT NOT, display any PCM fault codes. It can only display data that is available to the instrument cluster.
It is not helpful to give advice that will lead someone on a wild goose chase.
You need an OBDII scan tool to pull the PCM fault codes on 96-03 trucks. There is no key sequence that will trigger the display of anything useful.
Take it to a parts store and get the code(s) read. WRITE THEM DOWN. Do NOT let the monkeys at the store try to diagnose the fault since they likely do not have the necessary skills (that's why they work at a parts counter, not under a hood). Come back here with the codes for assistance.
... or go to WalMart and buy the cheap Innova code reader for $65 and pull them yourself. It's a very basic tool, but is better than nothing.
